In a remote and isolated mountain village, Lin Gensheng, who works away from home, returns to visit his family, only to learn upon entering the village that his six-year-old daughter, Lin Niannian, has gone missing. Clan elder Lin Dehou mobilizes villagers to search along the river, where they find the child's shoe. Everyone hastily concludes she fell into the water, even dredging up the rumor of the "River God Taking a Bride"—twenty years ago, Lin Gensheng's neighbor's little girl, Lin Xiaoman, also disappeared by the river. Unable to bear the blow, Lin Gensheng's mother, Lin Xiuzhi, attempts suicide and is rushed to the hospital for emergency care. Bai Rui, a volunteer teacher at the village elementary school, approaches Lin Gensheng and presents Niannian's diary, proving she was terrified of water and would never go to the river alone, believing there is a deeper secret behind her disappearance.
