Late at night, No. 7 Old Street, Chengnan. Lin Shen is crafting a specimen of a "late wife's laughter" for an elderly man—golden threads extract from his fingertips, solidifying into a warm bead. The door is pushed open, and Su Nian stands there holding a transparent memory bead. There is nothing inside the bead, yet it makes the old scar on Lin Shen's left wrist burn intensely. She remembers nothing, but her memory bead holds fragments from before he was five years old. Two blank beads, a childhood buried in fire, and words unheard for twenty-three years—"Niannian, run!"
