Su Jianxue, the legitimate daughter of the Marquis of Changping, was drugged at Lingshan Temple by her fiancé, Prince An, and her concubine-born sister, Su Xinyue, who plotted to ruin her chastity so that Prince An could swap brides and marry Su Xinyue. But by a twist of fate, Su Jianxue instead shared a passionate night with Emperor Pei Shiyan, who had slipped out of the palace in disguise and was rumored to be infertile. Failing to catch her in adultery, Su Xinyue and Prince An threatened the life of her younger brother, Su Shifang, to force Su Jianxue to petition for swapping brides. Even her father took Su Xinyue's side, all because Su Xinyue was pregnant with Prince An's child—a child destined to be adopted by the Emperor as the Crown Prince.
