At the age of twenty, Xiuqin married into the Lin family through an arranged exchange of brides, but unexpectedly on their wedding night, her husband Fulai died accidentally. Amidst her grief, her mother-in-law concluded that Xiuqin was a "jinx" who brought death to her son, subjecting her to all sorts of abuse and scolding, and even driving her out of the house. With nowhere to turn, Xiuqin fled to her natal family, but her partial parents, caring only for their son's marriage and their own family's pride, also heartlessly turned her away. Left destitute on the streets, Xiuqin was nearly harassed by local ruffians, fortunately saved just in time by Fulai's younger uncle, Linsheng. Down-to-earth and kind-hearted Linsheng felt pity for Xiuqin's lonely and helpless situation, and disregarding the gossip, took her in to stay at his home, for which he was repeatedly harassed by his sister-in-law.
